Serene mountain villa with scenic sea views

OVERVIEW 

Meaning ‘The Red Earth’ in Catalan, the walls resonate with beautifully warm ochre hues at this charming Mallorcan-style country house. Simple pale blue wooden shutters also echo the Mediterranean sky above and strip of shimmering sea of which this secluded mountain villa affords views. Inside is all swish, rustic-lux styling where wooden beams and terracotta tiling combine with colourful contemporary art and designer furnishings.

Sa Terra Rotja is one of three villas that occupy the Son Bunyola estate on the islands northwestern coast. It’s set in wonderful landscaped gardens, brimming with scented native flora and surrounded by pine forest. It’s a wonderfully secluded place, nestled amongst nature, where you can while away your holiday in sun-drenched serenity or exploring the unspoiled natural beauty of this rather special corner of the island. 

SETTING

Set at the end of four kilometres of winding driveway, the views en route alone are sure you leave you swooning. The gorgeous mountain setting is scattered with pine woods and tidily terraced citrus orchards and olive groves. The large estate provides plenty of space to explore, plus there are some lovely walking trails on your doorstep –  including along the coast to Son Bunyola Beach 20 minutes away. The pretty villages of Banyalbufar and Esporles are just a few kilometres and, despite the sense of complete remoteness, the buzzing island capital of Palma is just 30 minutes’ drive.

SLEEPING

The four bedrooms are spread over two floors and sleep up to eight guests between them. Decor mixes timeless elegance with modern elements and modern artworks. Upper floor rooms afford particularly lovely views over the sea. All rooms have their own luxury bathroom with walk-in shower, and one has a lovely big soaking tub with views of the verdant neighbouring mountainsides. 

RELAXING

Just down from the main house is 15 metres of swimming pool lined with cushioned loungers and big canvas parasols – the perfect place to unwind on lazy summer days. The pool can also be heated over chillier months. If you’re feeling active, there’s a tennis court too, shared with the other two villas, with rackets and balls provided.

EATING 

The villa has a beautifully sleek modern kitchen with top-range appliances that include a big oven and gas stove. There’s a cosy indoor dining room with fireplace, or for alfresco eating a lovely long table set on a covered terrace with sea views. 

If you fancy dining out,  you can enjoy meals with some wonderful coastal views at nearby Banyalbufar. Alternatively, Esporles is a pretty little town inland with some great places to eat.
