Charming stone villa with ancient turret and sea views
There are few villas on Mallorca that can claim to be a real piece of island history, but Son Balagueret is one. This lovely honey-hued house features an original turret dating back to the 13th century, while also being built in the traditional style around a charming courtyard. Inside is an artful combination of rustic stone, cosy modern decor and high-end comforts perfect for a relaxing break.
The villa is also part of the 700-acre Son Bunyola estate, located up in the Tramuntana mountains and affording truly spectacular views over the island northwest coast. The well-tended gardens are all brimming with lush Mediterranean flora and the scent of surrounding pine forests. Nestled in forested sierra you are immersed in the seclusion and serenity of a genuinely enchanting natural environment.
The Son Balagueret villa is situated at the end of four kilometres of private driveway that winds up the mountain range and offers stunning vistas as you go. The gorgeous pine-clad sierra is punctuated with clusters of olive, almond and citrus groves, too. Together with the large estate to explore on foot, you’ll find some wonderful walking trails nearby, including one running to Son Bunyola Beach 20 minutes away. There are several villages within easy driving distance as well, and the capital Palma is little more than half an hour by road.
The villa has four bedrooms sleeping up to eight guests, each tastefully finished with a mixture of traditional Mallorcan furnishings, calming contemporary tones and colourful artworks. Rooms are spread over three floors, each with their own bathroom, and all with fabulous views of the dramatic Mallorcan landscape. The most elevated vistas can be found up a winding staircase in the snug bedroom located in the villa’s ancient turret.
Steps lead down through the gardens to the villa’s sun-soaked swimming pool, where you can spend lazy days reclined on cushioned loungers. The pool can be heated if necessary and there’s a poolside bar, too, for preparing refreshments. Other shaded seating areas are dotted around the pool, while next to the house is a comfy outside lounge with fabulous sea views.
Inside, another lounge is split between cosy sitting area with fireplace and steps leading up to a TV room with sofa and armchairs. If you fancy practising your forehand, there’s a tennis court available too, shared between the estate with rackets and balls provided.
A well-equipped granite-topped kitchen has everything you’ll need for a self-catering holiday, plus a breakfast table and French doors opening onto a terrace with seating. There’s a small informal dining room inside, while an alfresco terrace offers a long dining table comfortably seating eight and accompanying your meal with sea views.
If you’re thinking of eating out, the nearby town of Banyalbufar offers some restaurants with spectacular coastal panoramas. And few kilometres inland is Esporles, a lovely little town with some excellent dining spots.
